000 – Pass.. My.. Inhaler..

Katrina is 34 year old lawyer who presents with shortness of breath.

Her observations are:

  • Resp rate: 32
  • Sats: 93% on room air
  • Temp: 36.8
  • BP: 102/79
  • HR: 106

She is too breathless to give you much of a history but you gather she has asthma for which she has blue and brown inhalers. She says her blue inhaler is not helping as much as usual.

On examination, she is tachypneic, her trachea is central and she has poor air entry bilaterally with widespread wheeze.

You immediately recognise this as:

Moderate acute asthma

Acute severe asthma

Life-threatening asthma
